From simplicity comes complexity.  You might not think about it, but intricate artwork starts out with just a few simple lines.  From those simple lines, patterns begin to emerge until they start to reveal a complex, captivating art piece. This is how you can describe the artwork by Marlon Berces’ Tangles and Curves. With his meticulously detailed artwork on shirts and other merch, you'll be proud to wear his artwork that is unlike anything you've seen before. Find out more about this artist below.

How did you come up with your brand name?
I love creating tangles and curves from simple to complex forms. I also enjoy exploring different forms of shapes, lines, patterns and objects people have never seen before.

How did your journey as a Graphic Designer begin?
Well, since grade school, I have been in love with drawing and sketching. I even filled my notebooks with drawings of my favorite anime characters. Eventually, I improved during High School. I started to draw and paint portraits of people and animals.

Fast forward to 2008, I learned how to do graphic designs and illustration. I even got a job as a Senior Graphic Artist. Then in 2010, I fell in love with curves, patterns and lines using traditional (pen and ink) and digital designs. I'm currently showcasing this style of mine. The funny thing is, I don't have any idea how to call it, but I will continue to improve and innovate it.

What is your inspiration when creating a design?
I don't have any inspiration when creating my artworks. I just want to create the inspiration out of nothingness. My passion for art drives me everyday to do a lot of things.

What is your favorite subject to create, and why?
Women, which includes the intricate details of curves, are my favorite subjects to create. What I love about them is their face. It gives mystery, balance, and complexity.

Every Graphic Designer has that one creation they're proud of the most. For you, what is that piece, and why?
I'm especially proud of the Facing Monsters Series. This is the first series of my artworks that is too personal. I really value this series because it comes from my own experience as an artist and the struggles, depression and dilemma I'm facing in my daily life with monsters killing me inside.

What are the struggles you encounter as an Artist?
Viewers who treat art as simple as 'ABC' . Often, they do not pause to understand and appreciate. That's why it lessens the value of any piece. It's really hard to tap the right market as you start to make a reputation and a name.

What is the most important achievement you've accomplished as a Graphic Designer?
Among the achievements I am proud of is when I was chosen as a Finalist in the 2017 Hyundai Digital Art Contest.Plus, it was when I exhibited my paintings and designs in different events around the country.

What makes you stand out as an Artist?
Authenticity of work and a unique style. I also never stop learning and innovating.

What do people say about your designs?
Most of them say that my designs are insanely intricate and have an impressive style. The execution of all elements, like curves, lines, shades, patterns and strokes, are well delivered.

They all wonder and ask how I did it and how many hours it took. Some say that my designs are similar to Doodle and Zentangle. Some figure out the meaning behind the elements, and I think the design speaks for itself regarding the interpretation of my work as a whole.

How do you handle criticism directed towards your work?
I accept their criticism with an open mind because you cannot please everybody. I have two things to remember when it comes to criticism - either, just let it go or learn from it.

Are you more comfortable working alone, or do you prefer being a part of a group?
I always love to work alone because I have some rituals before I start working. There are times too that I also love to do collaborations with different artists.

Do you have any advice for talented individuals who are about to start their Graphic Design career?
Always draw, paint and design. Never stop learning new things because the clock never stops. You cannot discover your style in lesser works of art. That's the reason why I continue to do what I love. Learn to be patient because all of us will have the right time and moment to shine. Never ever give up on art because art will never leave you behind.

How did you know about Merchiful, and why did you choose it as the platform of your designs?
At first, I was planning to have my own apparel business but it needed a big capital. I did some research by browsing local websites offering Print on Demand. I found out that Merchiful is the right company to trust my designs with. Their service fits my need for apparel and merchandise business. They are very transparent and communicate very well.

What can Merchiful customers expect from you?
Customers can expect more designs that will become a constant part of their fashion sense. My designs will also inspire them to wear their own identity.

How would you describe yourself in one word?
Humble.
